Based in Germany, Otto Spanner GmbH has been a successful player in the metal working industry for many years. Their renowned and efficient services have satisfied the needs of major industry brands for more than 50 years including BMW, Porsche and AEG.
Discovering a gap in the market for pellet boilers, Otto Spanner GmbH established the daughter company in 2004 – Spanner RE² GmbH. This decision paved the way for the company to achieve more independence from the automotive industry as well as at opening up a new business field. Shortly after in 2006, the company liaised with the inventor of wood gasification units and the first unit was sold by Spanner RE² in 2008. To this day the company has sold over 550 units all over the world and is renowned for their exceptional service and quality in-house training.
“The mission of Spanner RE² is the development and commercial exploitation of innovative, economically attractive regenerative power generation technologies,” commented Michael Westermaier of Spanner RE² GMBH. “Our quality, proven technology is engineered and manufactured in Germany and every product has ‘advanced gasification’ classification by OFGEM in UK.
“We are the most experienced manufacturer and have the best reputation with references all over the world. Unlike our competitors, we don’t work with resellers and every customer buys directly from the manufacturer.”
Since its establishment the company has grown significantly and now specialises in renewable energy, producing exceptional Biomass CHPs for those with a high heat demand. Their efficient wood cogeneration plant is just one example of how the company has stayed ahead of the game in terms on innovation and product development.
The intelligent machine converts wood chips into biomass electricity and warmth with extremely high efficiency. Run using natural wood chips, it provides attractive cost advantages and/or increased power yields according to location and legal conditions.
The newly developed, compact wood cogeneration systems HV30-V1.1 and HV45-V1.1 make it possible to fit the systems in rooms with a minimum standard ceiling height of 2.50m. Besides heat insulation, all the heat-carrying components are covered with a resistant coating. A more efficient generator is used for the CHP, which further increases the efficiency of the overall system.
The performance sizes of 30 kWel or 45 kWel have proved themselves, as these dimensions are particularly good in covering base loads for heating grids. If necessary, several systems can be combined seamlessly.
These advanced systems have satisfied the needs of hundreds of customers in Europe, Asia and North America in agriculture and forestry, hotels, restaurants and heat grids, powered with biomass electricity and warmth from wood gasifier.
“As a company that is working in the field of renewables you have to be quick in the building up and bringing down of the capacity of production,” Michael explained. “For example, every quarter year there is a cut down in the RHI (renewable heat incentive) in the UK, so we have to rise our production quite quick. And a few month later it could be, that there will be no sales and you have to slow down the production.
“Our aim is to continue to focus on the UK market, as it is one of our biggest, expanding our markets and also looking to develop services in Ireland, who are planning to bring up a renewables law similar to the one in UK. This year alone we have gained a great deal of new customers in the UK and have sold close to 100 units. We are now looking to build up a structure for service in UK, to continue to support our customers there.”
To help raise their profile in Ireland, Spanner RE² recently attended the National Ploughing Championships – one of Europe’s largest agricultural shows which welcomes 300,000 visitors. Exhibiting their wood chips driven Biomass CHP there the first time, the company received a great deal of interest in this new, environmental friendly technology.
Other shows attended by the company this year include the LAMMA Show, EnergyNow, All Energy, APF Exhibition, Pic & Poultry & the Royal Highland Show, where over 80 units were sold.
“We want to work for a better reputation of wood gasification. In the past many companies have tried to build gasifiers but have failed, giving the systems a bad reputation. Our systems however, are extremely advanced and satisfy the needs of a great deal of customers in many industries.”
